In India, a Chittar is a piece of paper written on with a mixture of symbols, most of which are derived from the Indian numeral system. It is a form of money, used primarily in India and Nepal. It is the smallest unit of currency in India and Nepal, and in some countries of South Asia, such as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, it is the most important currency. It is the second most important currency in India, after the Indian Rupee, and the third in Nepal.

In India, a chittar is used to make a number of transactions, including sales of goods and services, payment of wages, and the exchange of money.

In both India and Nepal, chittars are used to pay for the goods and services that are offered by merchants. In India, these merchants are known as Chittar Panci or "chittar dealers". In Nepal, these merchants are known as Tuk Tuk Panchi or "tuk tuk vendors".

In addition to making sales, the primary purpose of a chittar dealer is to collect money. In India, the most common form of money collection is known as "kirana" or the purchase and sale of goods. In Nepal, the most common form of money collection is known as "chakka".
